Voice and Data Cabling…A Little Nova HistoryIn 1988, Nova started out installing both the ARCNET and AppleTalk local area network (LAN) protocols to provide customers with cabling. ARCNET (Attached Resource Computer Network) was the first networking system for microcomputers. AppleTalk, on the other hand, was used for Macintosh computers and ran over the PhoneNet network. It was a proprietary suite of protocols developed specifically for computer networking. After ARCNET and AppleTalk, Nova began installing 10BASE-T, a copper-based computer networking method. Nova started using this cabling method in Orange County before 10BASE-T had become an industry-approved IEEE standard. 10BASE-T was the first implementation of Ethernet on a twisted pair wiring that was independent of vendors. By using twisted wiring instead of coaxial cable, signal integrity is enhanced and the system is less costly to implement. Nowadays, Nova also offers 100BASE-T, which is similar to 10BASE-T but faster, running at 100 megabits per second compared to 10. If that isn’t fast enough, Nova can set you up with 1000BASE-T or even 10GBASE-T (IEEE 802.3), which runs at a whopping 10,000 megabits (10 gigabits) per second. Additionally, Nova offers Cat 5e and Cat 6 copper cable. Category 5e cable is a twisted pair cabling type that is designed for high speed integrity. Primarily, it is used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet. It can also be used to carry many other signals, such as basic voice services and token ring. Category 6 is a cable standard that is used for Gigabit Ethernet, as well as other network protocols, and features more rigorous specifications for system noise and crosstalk. Since it can provide performance of up to 250 MHz, it is optimal for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, 1000BASE-T, and even 10GBASE-T. Fiber-optic CableFiber-optic cable is another option that Nova offers. Fiber optic cable is similar to copper cable, except that it uses light pulses to send information down fiber lines instead of using electronic pulses to send information down copper lines. This gives fiber-optic cable a number of advantages over copper. One such advantage is speed. The high speeds under which fiber optic networks operate can go into the gigabits. Additionally, these cables cost less to maintain, are more resistant to electromagnetic noise, and can transmit further without having to be refreshed or strengthened. Increasingly, companies are turning to fiber optic cable for their telecommunication networks. Data Center InstallationSince 1988, Nova Voice & Data Systems, Inc. has designed and installed voice and data cable in thousands of buildings throughout the U.S.A. All installations are warrenteed for 15 years and Nova tests 100 percent of its runs, ensuring that every single cable pull is certified to the customer’s requirements. Nova uses a CAD/CAM system to design data centers that meet today’s needs for large and small companies. It has designed the voice and data system for Burlington Air Express’ (BAX) hub in Toledo, Ohio and has designed and installed cabling systems for businesses such as the Brinks Home Security in Denver and the Union Transport International (UTi) corporate headquarters in Long Beach. Nova is a licensed California contractor with a C7 license (license number 592116) dating back to 1988 and is fully insured and bonded. Nova has installed voice and data networks in every single U.S. state and has even consulted on a network design in Saudi Arabia. When it comes to voice and data cabling, choose a company with the experience to ensure that it is designed and installed according to your company’s unique needs and IEEE standards.
