HIPAA - what is it? and why should i care about it?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, or HIPAA, is a law that demands data privacy and security provisions to safeguard medical information.  If you work in health care or handle any type of medical record, you probably fall under HIPAA rules!

There are two main components to securing and protecting the data and privacy of medical records under HIPAA rules: the first is the HIPAA Privacy Rule, which establishes national standards to protect patient information, and the second is the HIPAA Security Rule, which sets standards for patient data security.

the high cost of low security

In the first seven months of 2016, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recorded $15 million in settlements due to HIPAA violations.  In addition to penalties owed to HHS, HIPAA violations can expose your business to civil and criminal penalties. Compliance with HIPAA isn't just a best practice and good customer service - it is legally required and willful neglect in this area has severe monetary consequences.
